High Bay LightsWhat is the Best High Bay Lighting Solution for You?

By Kenneth Auker

In Late 2006, Hurst Controls installed 40 Orion Lighting ENF6 luminaries in a 39,000 sq. ft. freezer unit for Denver Cold Storage, Denver PA.  These fixtures are 6-lamp, instant-start fluorescent high bay fixtures in a compact modular freezer enclosure.

Why did Denver Cold Storage prefer these fixtures to the 400-watt metal halide high bay lights they had previously used?  According to Mr. Moses Stoltzfus, owner, the answer is clear. The ENF6 offers cost savings in every dimension.  First, consider the energy savings of the lights themselves.   At 221 watts, each fixture saves approximately 240 watts over the 400 W metal halide fixtures.  Assuming that the lights are on 16 hours per day for 6 days each week yields a savings of nearly 48,000 Kwh annually.   That 48,000 Kwh will save Denver Cold Storage and astonishing $3600 annually.

The next big savings is on savings from cooling.  In a freezer, every watt of light output has to be removed to maintain the temperature.  A savings of 823 BTUs per fixture translates into approximately 3 tons of cooling capacity.  More efficient? Definitely!

Lower replacement costs and lower recycling costs generate additional cost savings.   The fluorescent high bays have a longer expected life than the metal halide, because, Mr. Stoltzfus is using extended-life lamps rated at 30,000 hours.  Mr. Stoltzfus projects replacing the lamps only every 5 or 6 years.  This results in less maintenance time.  When replacement time does arrive, the 6 fluorescent lamps cost about half the cost of a single metal halide lamp.  Further, the fluorescent lamps cost less to recycle than the MH lamps.

Besides all of this, the fluorescent lamps shine more brightly. The fluorescent lamps have less lumen depreciation over time than the MH lamps.  The fluorescent light output depreciates only about 5% versus up to 25% for MH lamps.  Brighter light yields better ability to pick orders, thus increasing operational efficiency.  On top of this, the fluorescents produce a color rendering index of 85 versus only 65 for the MH lamps.  Another benefit is the instant start of the fluorescents versus the delay with metal halide lamps, even pulse start MH take longer to start.

Mr. Stoltzfus said that he expects to get better lighting for less wattage with the ENF6.  He is so pleased with their performance that he plans to replace the lights in his other freezer facilities with 60 more ENF6 fixtures.  He agreed that it really is a win-win situation.
